Quantity breaks

How to add quantity breaks (volume discounts) to Shopify

Quantity breaks reward shoppers for buying more of the same product: buy 2, save 10%; buy 3, save 20%. They are the simplest way to raise order value without discounting single purchases.

What a quantity break is

A quantity break (also called tiered pricing or a volume discount) lowers the price per item as the quantity goes up. It works best on products people use up or buy more than one of: supplements, skincare, coffee, socks, pet food, printing.

Doing it with Shopify's own discounts

  1. Go to Discounts → Create discount → Amount off products and choose Automatic discount.
  2. Set the percentage (10%) and the products.
  3. Under Minimum purchase requirements, choose Minimum quantity of items: 2.
  4. Repeat for every further tier (3 items at 20%), and set how the discounts combine.

That works, but each tier is a separate discount, and none of them shows on the product page. The shopper only sees the saving in the cart. (Shopify's quantity price breaks for B2B catalogs are a separate feature for wholesale customers.)

Showing the tiers where people decide

The point of a quantity break is to change what people put in the cart, so the tiers belong on the product page. With ZS Bundles:

  1. Install the app, press Turn on in theme, and Save.
  2. Create bundle deal → Quantity breaks. The tiers come filled in (Single, Duo 15%, Trio 20%), so you only adjust them.
  3. Choose a percentage, a fixed amount off, or an exact price per tier. The subtitle can show the saving automatically.
  4. Pick the products (one product, a few, a collection or all products) and Publish.

The shopper picks a tier and presses your theme's own Add to cart button. The discount is applied at checkout automatically.

How to choose the tiers

  • Three tiers is enough. One (full price), two (a real saving), three (the best saving).
  • Make the jump visible. 5% rarely changes behaviour. 10–15% for two and 20% for three usually does.
  • Badge the middle tier. "Most popular" on the two-pack nudges people up from one.
  • Measure orders, not clicks. Look at average order value and revenue per visitor before and after.
